The San Antonio Humane Society, a “no-kill” shelter, is working together with the city and other animal welfare organizations to make San Antonio a “no-kill” city. We firmly believe that achieving this goal will take cooperation from all of us to save lives of innocent, orphaned animals. The SAHS has been operating a separate receiving facility at Animal Care Services since October 2011. Since then, we have quadrupled the number of dogs and cats we previously rescued from ACS. Our efforts have helped to raise the city’s live release rate to more that 58%, which is a big jump from 11% only 5 years ago. We have maintained a 96% live release rate at our facility on Fredericksburg Road and continue to look for ways to take in more animals and get them into forever, loving homes as quickly as possible.

The San Antonio Humane Society is a non-profit no kill organization that relies entirely on donations, grants and self generated revenue to operate. We are not affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States or ASPCA. We do not receive support from the county, state or federal agencies. We are not a United Way Agency.

We abide by the AFP (Association of Fundraising Professionals) Code of Ethics, AFP Standards of Professional Practice, and the Donor Bill of Rights.

Corporate Matching Gifts Program
Step-by-Step process to acquire matching gifts
1. Ask the Human Resources Officer where you work if there is a charitable Matching Gift program (hundreds of companies—large and small—have one).
2. If the answer is "yes", ask for a Matching Gift Form and complete your portion. IF THE ANSWER IS NO, talk to your HR Director and suggest you consider it! It is a clear way to lengthen your employee’s stay at the company when they see the good works they are involved in!
3. Include the form with your next gift to your charity. That's all it takes to double the good you do! All company-matching funds go to provide desperately needed support many different efforts nationwide.

Charitable Gift Annuities
A charitable gift annuity is a special giving arrangement in which, in return for a gift of at least $5,000 (or $10,000 for two annuitants), the San Antonio Humane Society provides guaranteed, fixed payments to you and/or another person for the rest of your lives. The rate of your payments is based on your age when the gift is made and will not change. A portion of your annuity payments may be tax-free, depending on the specifics of the gift. A charitable gift annuity also entitles you to partial income tax charitable deduction and may provide capital gains and estate tax benefits. After your lifetime, the remainder of your gift will support the work of San Antonio Humane Society.

Qualified Charitable Distributions from IRAs
The Congress has reinstated the Act that permits tax-free charitable gifts from mandatory IRA distributions for tax years 2012 and 2013. Under the Act, a distribution to a qualified charity can satisfy all or part of your required distribution. For example, if you are over the age of 70.5, have a required minimum IRA distribution of $25,000, and receive the funds yourself, the entire distribution is taxable as ordinary income. However, if you transfer some or all of that amount—let’s say $5,000-- directly to the San Antonio Humane Society (or any qualified charity), only $20,000 would be taxed as ordinary income. Of course, be sure to check with your tax advisor before making your distribution. Note that this charitable distribution is limited to persons age 70.5 and older, and such charitable distributions may not exceed $100,000 per year.
